Hiring a wedding photographer can be one of the many stressful components of planning a wedding. To make things harder, there are a million to choose from.
After you have sifted through the plethora of ads, websites, and online portfolios to see whose style you can't live without, there is more to do: meet the photographer. A photographer's personality is almost as important as their work itself. When I book a client, I meet both the bride and groom and ask them things about their personality, how they met, etc. Effective photography should tell a story, and at your wedding it should tell your story. Be weary of cold, overly-professional photographers that are fixated more on "how they operate" than what you want. Make sure to select somebody that is flexible. They should be genuinely interested in you and your story, and should adapt their shooting accordingly (as opposed to some photographers that take the same standard shots at every wedding.) A good photographer is educated in their field and can shoot a variety of styles, and shouldn't push their own style on you.
Do not book with a photographer until both you and your fiancee have met with them. It is important that you both get a warm, "we're going to be best friends by the time this is over" feeling. Chances are, your photographer will be the one giving you that urgent last-minute pep talk or safety pin!
If you are not sure after meeting with a photographer, just tell them that you will need some time to think about it, and get back to them. Do not feel pressured to sign a contract that day. If you do not decide to use them, however, be considerate and let them know so that they can make themselves available to somebody else on that day.
