The title of this article in the Albuquerque Tribune caught my eye today – “Who Gets A Wedding Invitation?” Obviously I am interested in anything and everything wedding so I read the article which is really a Q&A with the local etiquette expert Thelma Domenici.
Anyway the reader asks Thelma “if you invite people to an engagement party, do you have to automatically invite them to the wedding?”. Please click over to the article to read Thelma’s full reply but the short reply is “no”.
HOWEVER, an engagement party should not be confused with a bridal shower. Engagement parties are just parties and no gift is expected. In the case of a bridal shower, gifts are the reason for the party and therefore a gift is expected.
You should never invite someone to a bridal shower or other wedding related party where gifts are given and not invite that person to the wedding – no matter how small the wedding.
The one exception to this rule applies to “office” bridal showers. These are the little showers thrown by co-workers and held in the office or at a nearby restaurant. These office showers are usually out of the bride’s control and sometimes the bride doesn’t even know about them. In this case, no bride should feel obligated to invite any or all co-workers to the wedding.
