Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought I would share some information about a wonderful charity called the Making Memories Foundation that raises money to benefit terminal breast cancer patients. According to its Web site, the mission of the Making Memories Foundation is:
"To provide an opportunity for metastatic breast cancer patients to fulfill a dream or wish. It is our intention to provide cancer patients with a special time of 'Making Memories' together with their families, a chance that might not have become a reality without the assistance of the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation."

"To advance the awareness of breast cancer and to educate the public about the vast resources and support available to breast cancer patients and their families."
One of the ways in which the Making Memories Foundation raises money is through its Brides Against Breast Cancer "Nationwide Tour of Gowns". I got involved with this charity in the Spring of 2005 and chaired the Atlanta event in both 2005 and 2006. It was so much fun and a great way for brides to find designer gowns at bargain prices. Some of the gowns are used gowns donated by individuals but MANY of the gowns have never been worn and have been donated by bridal stores and manufacturers across the country.

As the Making Memories Foundation tours the country with the gowns, they are also collecting MORE gowns from donors so the "inventory" is always getting replenished. Yes, some of the dresses that are donated by individuals are out of style BUT, the Making Memories Foundation has a VERY talented seamstress that takes the out of style gowns and re-works them to make them updated and modern. Sometimes poufy sleeves are removed to make a tank neckline. Many dresses with outdated necklines are turned into one-of-a-kind strapless creations. Stains are removed and dresses are cleaned when necessary!

Prices for the gowns range from $49 to $599, including hundreds of beautiful, new, name brand and designer gowns valued up to $4,000.

I have to admit I was amazed at the number of beautiful designer gowns on sale at this charity event and I am honored to be involved with it.

I thought it would be fun to share what a bride thought about the gown sale. This bride happens to be a friend of mine who got engaged just before the Atlanta gown sale in 2005. Following is her experience in her own words:
When my friend Lei first told me about the "Brides Against Breast Cancer" bridal gown sale, I knew I wanted to buy my wedding dress there. I was newly engaged and excited about dress shopping. And like most people in Atlanta, sadly, I could think of several people I've known who have battled breast cancer or who have friends and family who have. The idea of helping to raise funds for the Making Memories foundation and at the same time find a wedding dress I love for a great price - well, I couldn't think of a better win-win situation.

I showed up on Saturday morning at the hotel lobby in Buckhead prepared to see a few racks of dresses. What I saw wasn't just a few racks - It was an entire roomful of dresses. Rows and rows of white satin, taffeta, silk and organza. Some were sleek, some poufy. Some were adorned with flowers, some with sequins. All of them were stunning. There were hundreds of dresses donated by bridal shops, chic boutiques and brides themselves. While some were worn once and others still had a price tag on them, all of them had the potential to be the one I'd wear on the Big Day. I knew my gown was in there somewhere! What amazed me was the selection of dresses that had been donated to this great cause. All the proceeds would go to the Making Memories foundation to grant wishes to women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Choosing a dress was no easy chore, especially when there was every style, fabric, and even color to choose from. (Who knew you could get a bridal gown in light blue?) That's why it helped to have volunteers there to advise brides on which dresses to try on. They always knew when a bride had found The Dress. It was a certain look on the bride's face that gave it away every time.

I must have had the look too, because I ended up buying my wedding gown that day. And when I checked out, the co-founder of the charity thanked me and told me I was helping to make someone's wish come true. All the brides who left that day with a gown in hand benefited a worthy cause and bought the dress of their dreams for a fraction of the retail price. If only every day could be that rewarding!

The Making Memories Foundation tours the country with these gowns and I am sure they will be in a city near you! Their schedule is subject to change but you can find the most updated schedule by visiting their Web site: www.makingmemories.org.

If you are in the Atlanta area, we are planning the sale again for late March early April so I will keep you posted as to the exact date and location.
