Unique and Memorable Wedding Photography

The very thing that makes wedding/engagement photos so special is their ability to tell a story about two unique people... to show your love, adventure,  dreams, or even mischieviousness.  And if your photographer understands who you are, and where you are coming from, then he/she can use your personal background to better craft that story.  I know this from my experience both as a photographer... and as a bride!

Immediately after I got engaged, my mother convinced me to hire the most well-respected photographer in my hometown to photograph my wedding.  I took her advice, but having never been on the same page with my mother aesthetically, I borrowed a friend's wedding album to preview his work.  And thank goodness I did - photo after photo depicted the same couple smiling stiffly, and staring blankly into the camera.  The photos reveled nothing about the couple's personality, and showed no excitement, whimsy, passion or even quirkiness.  Who were these people?  The photos certainly did not provide any clues!  At that moment, I knew I would have to find another photographer... one interested in getting to know me.  Ultimately, I did find my special photographer, and I still cherish the lovely wedding photos that line my hallway.

How do you know if you can trust your photographer to tell your story?  Here is a short checklist:

1) Portfolio review.  Obviously, you'll need to review other wedding work your photographer has done, first and foremost.  If the portfolio photos are stiff and posed, chances are that you'd be better off moving on.  If the photos are engaging, that is a good sign.

2) Meeting.  Make sure that your photographer schedules a one-on-one meeting with you to discuss you and your special day.  Also, make sure that your photographer is not merely going through the motions, but is fully engaged in learning about your personal and wedding details.

3) Personal Attention.  Make sure that your photographer gives you the personal attention you need - via email and phone.  If your photographer never returns your emails or calls, chances are that he/she is not the person to trust with capturing your memories!

4) Reviews.  Check your photographer's website for reviews from other clients/brides.  If you can't find reviews, ask your photographer for referrals.

Good luck finding the perfect photographer to tell your special story!
